Vol. 162 No. 1

Written Answers. - Moisture Content of Wheat.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce what percentage of moisture is allowed to the Irish millers for imported and for native wheat, respectively, and who decides on the percentage.

The moisture content at which native or imported wheat is milled is determined by the individual miller concerned. In practice, the average moisture content of the grist is about 16½ per cent.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state for an average year the percentage of moisture estimated to be in English and Irish wheat, respectively, by the experts at Rothamsted Experimental Station, England, and the Albert Farm, Glasnevin.

Mr. Moylan

The moisture content of the bulk of the wheat grown in this country varies between 20 per cent. and 25 per cent. In exceptional circumstances the moisture content may be above or below these figures. It is not possible, however, to quote an average figure for moisture content in Irish wheat because of variations in weather conditions during the harvest period and in methods of harvesting.

As a general rule the moisture content of English wheat is lower than that of Irish wheat.
