Vol. 162 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Recruitment of Racecourses and Show Grounds Personnel.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether Tote clerks, car park attendants, and turnstile stewards at racecourses and show-grounds are recruited through the employment exchanges.

In general, the racecourse and show-ground personnel mentioned are not recruited through the employment exchanges.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that there is a strong belief that priority in employment in the Tote on race days is given to high civil servants, and, if so, will he take steps to ensure that, in future, priority in this matter will be given to those who are unemployed?

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that the majority of these jobs are given to persons who are already in employment and who take on this work during the period of their annual holidays?

It would be unwarranted interference with the liberty of the subject to use compulsion in this matter.

Is that why the £140,000 was given back to the Racing Board?

The Minister for Health would not have done better than that reply of the Parliamentary Secretary.
