Vol. 164 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Caherciveen Cold Storage Plant.

asked the Minister for Lands whether the plans in regard to the proposal for the erection of a cold storage plant at Caherciveen have been scrapped, and, if so, on what grounds such a change was made, and, if not, if he will make a statement which will assure South Kerry fishermen that the erection of the cold storage plant will be proceeded with as originally arranged.

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative and, accordingly, the second part does not arise.

I am informed by An Bord Iascaigh Mhara that their plans for Caherciveen remain unaltered; that it is their intention to commence work on the provision of the ice plant in the near future, and that it is hoped that local supplies of ice will be available to the South Kerry fishermen next spring.

I should add that the project was shelved as an economy measure in 1956 and has since been revived.
