Vol. 164 No. 6

Ceisteanna-Questions. Oral Answers. - Bord na Móna Employees in Mayo.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state with particular reference to categories (a) the number of persons employed at present by Bord na Móna at Bellwick, County Mayo, and (b) the number so employed on the corresponding date in 1956.

I assume that the question relates to the scheme known as Tionnscal Abhainn Einne. The following information in connection with that scheme has been supplied by Bord na Móna:—

Week ending 15/11/57

Week ending 14/11/56

Labourers

32

73

Skilled or semi-skilled

63

93

Administrative and clerical

5

11

TOTAL

100

177

The board state that with the exception of one member of the administrative and clerical staff, there was no lay-off of labour during the period and that the decrease in the number employed was due entirely to men leaving the board's employment of their own accord.

Will the Minister indicate whether, on the vacation of posts in Bord na Móna, there was an advertisement or any effort to seek other workers to replace them?

Mr. Lemass

The Deputy will have to give me notice of that question.

The Deputy should be told that it was his Party who were responsible for the easing off of the work.

Fianna Fáil had started this work——

What is the question?

What about the pledge you gave in the name of Deputy Lemass last February?
