Vol. 164 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition and Division of North Mayo Estates.

asked the Minister for Lands if, in view of the fact that there are 40 tenants on the Bingham estate, Tullaghanduff, Geesala, comprising a few thousand acres of land, the greater part of which is in rundale, the Land Commission have considered the propriety of acquiring this estate.

asked the Minister for Lands whether the Land Commission have yet prepared a scheme for the striping of the Carter and Bingham estate, Martylee, Geesala, County Mayo, and, if so, when it is likely to be put into operation.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 65 and 66 together.

The question of rearranging these townlands is being investigated by the Land Commission. The Deputy will appreciate, however, that rearrangement depends upon the co-operation of the tenants and also the amount of untenanted land available, through migrations and otherwise. Some migrants have already been taken from these districts and the migration of further tenants is under consideration.

Is it not correct that the Land Commission are already in possession of the Carter estate?

That is correct, but the co-operation of the tenants has to be secured, as the Deputy knows, in all cases.
