Vol. 164 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fencing and Draining of South Mayo Holdings.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware of the grave discontent among the rearranged tenants on the Peyton estate, County Mayo, because of the inadequacy of the fencing and draining of some of the holdings, and, if so, if he will arrange to have the wishes of the tenants carried out as soon as practicable, so as to relieve them of the loss and inconvenience which they are suffering.

Following completion of a comprehensive rearrangement scheme in respect of this estate, two complaints, dealing with drainage and boundary fencing, were received in the Land Commission. The former is at present being investigated; the latter has already been dealt with.

Is the Minister aware that there is much discontent there because of lack of fencing by the Land Commission which the tenants themselves are unable to carry out? The lack of fencing has left portions of the holdings practically derelict and useless and it was not the custom of the Land Commission not to complete the fencing.

I am aware that a very comprehensive system of improvements has been put into operation by the Land Commission and that a supplemental sanction was granted when these appeared not to be sufficient. I can only draw the attention of the Land Commission to the representations of the Deputy. So far as I know there has been adequate expenditure and the vast majority of the tenants are satisfied.
