Vol. 165 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bluebell (Inchicore) Dual Carriageway.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state in respect of the dual carriageway at Bluebell, Naas Road, Inchicore, the name of the local authority which (a) constructed, and (b) maintains it; whether the plans for its construction were approved by his Department; and, further, why such a comparatively modern road has deteriorated to such an extent.

The road to which the Deputy refers was constructed by Dublin Corporation, who also have responsibility for maintaining it. Plans for its construction were approved by my Department on 5th July, 1941. The scheme was carried out with the aid of a grant from the Employment and Emergency Schemes Vote when the rotational system for employment of labour was in operation, and, apart from this factor which affected the quality of work on the scheme, there was, I understand, difficulty at the time, in obtaining first quality aggregates for concrete on account of the petrol shortage.

Is there any truth in the suggestion that part of the reason for this bad work was that one of the people concerned was more interested in following the advice of the Taoiseach than in looking after the work—that he was interested in keeping bees down in the hollow?

Why do you not take them out of your attic?

The Minister for Health was then Minister for Local Government. He knows all about it.
