Vol. 165 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Butter and Bacon Subsidies.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state in reference to the period 1st April, 1957, to 31st December, 1957, (a) the total quantity of butter exported from the State in respect of which a subsidy was paid, and (b) the total amount of the subsidy paid on such butter.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply which I gave to a question on this subject on the 12th February, 1958.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state the estimated amounts to be paid in butter subsidy and bacon subsidy during the current financial year.

It is estimated that the amounts which would be required to meet Exchequer subsidies on butter and bacon in respect of the current financial year will be £3,210,000 (including £2,795,500 export subsidy) on creamery butter and £787,000 (all export subsidy) on bacon. I cannot as yet say how much of these amounts will be paid before the 31st March next, as the existing Vote provision is insufficient and a Supplementary Estimate will have to be introduced.

Could the Minister say whether the sum of £787,000 represents the Exchequer contribution to the bacon subsidy or whether it includes the proceeds of the levy which is made on pigs at the factory?

It represents the contribution from the Exchequer alone.

There is in addition to that a further sum, is there not, to be paid out of the levies by bacon factories?

I was not asked that question.

But there is that addition?

That is so.
