Vol. 165 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Naval Service.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state the cost of maintenance of the Naval Service in each of the years since 1946, analysed into (a) pay of personnel, (b) cost of actual operation of ships, (c) cost of administration, and (d) other costs.

The naval service is administered as an integral part of the Defence Forces and only certain classes of expenditure are separately recorded in respect of it. The cost of common services such as the feeding, clothing, housing etc. of personnel is not so recorded. Consequently, it is not possible to furnish all the information requested by the Deputy or to furnish it in the form specified by him.

The available information may, however, be of assistance to the Deputy and with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to have it circulated with the Official Report.

STATEMENT showing, in respect of the Naval Service, the actual expenditure in each year from 1946-47 to 1956-47 on (1) pay of personnel; (2) purchase and maintenance of vessels including fuel; and (3) other costs.

*Crews of Motor Torpedo Boats only. Corvettes not in commission until 1947.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state (a) the likely duration of serviceability of each of the three corvettes in the Naval Service, (b) the plans, if any, for the replacement of these craft, and (c) where the replacements are to be built or procured.

Reports by a marine surveyor on two of the corvettes of the Naval Service indicate that these vessels should be serviceable for many years to come. It is proposed to have the third corvette surveyed next financial year. There is no reason to believe that it will not also be found fit, subject to certain repairs, for considerable further service. In the circumstances there are no proposals under consideration for the building or procurement of vessels to replace the corvettes.
