asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the area of forests thinned in each financial year since 1st April, 1947, and the percentage such area represents in each case of the area of State forests as at the 1st April of that year, together with the volume or weight of sales and receipts from sales of thinnings in each such year.
I am taking Question Nos. 36 and 37 together.
The information requested by the Deputy in regard to the forest area thinned in each year since 1st April, 1947 is given in Cols. 2 and 3 of the appended table. Col. 4 gives the volume of trees thinned each year; volume for thinnings sold not being capable of segregation from total volume figures for sales. Col. 5 gives in respect of each year since 1950-51 onwards the cost of thinning; figures are not available for earlier years. Col. 6 gives total Forest Produce Receipts exclusive of Sawmill Receipts. Separate figures for sales of thinnings are not available. If the Deputy requires further information in lieu of the data not available I shall be happy to provide it so far as possible.
