asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state in respect of each financial year since 1947 (a) the amount expended under the Telephone Capital Acts, and (b) the proportions thereof (expressed in amounts and as a percentage of (a) expended on the provision of (1) new exchange buildings and extension of buildings to existing exchanges, (2) equipment for such new and extended exchanges, (3) coaxial trunk circuits, (4) other new trunk circuits, and (5) subscribers' installations.

The following table shows for the years mentioned the amounts expended under the Telephone Capital Acts and the amounts in categories (1) to (5). The total expended in these categories may not, in any particular year, correspond with the amount expended under the Acts as it is affected by the extent to which stocks of capital stores are increased or run down. The amounts have therefore been expressed as percentages of the total cost of telephone capital works in each year.
