Vol. 165 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Coarse Grains Account.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state in respect of the Coarse Grains Account (a) the balance on the 20th March, 1957, (b) the balance on the latest available date, and (c) what sums, if any, were paid between these two dates from such account into the Exchequer.

I am informed by Grain Importers (Eire), Limited, that the balance in the Coarse Grain Account of that company was £129,560 on 20th March, 1957, and £40,747 on 8th February, 1958. No payment was made from that account to the Exchequer between the dates mentioned.

Was it not nice that I left you the money you wanted?

You did not leave it to me.

I did. I left it in the Coarse Grains Account.

Surely the Deputy would not think he was right in leaving the cupboard entirely bare? He stripped it fairly well before he left.

Look up what the former Minister for Agriculture, Deputy Walsh, recommended.

The Deputy was bound to leave something behind.

I left a lot behind. I left a lot more than the Minister left me, a lot more than Deputy MacEntee left me in 1954 when I had to go to the bank the first week we took office.

We can laugh now.

The Minister could laugh at anything.
