Vol. 165 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Lands in Possession of Land Commission.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the number of acres of land in the possession of the Land Commission in respect of which the previous owners have not yet been paid, and the estimated total amount due to be paid.

Purchase moneys remaining for distribution in respect of untenanted land acquired by the Land Commission under the Land Acts 1923-'54 amounted, on 31st January, 1958, to £945,791 payable in Land Bonds equal in nominal amount thereto. This does not mean, however, that all the lands to which this amount refers are still in the possession of the Land Commission as allotment of acquired lands frequently takes place prior to allocation of the purchase money applicable thereto. The actual acreage involved is not readily available and could not be obtained without an examination of individual cases. This would be a very laborious task which, in present circumstances, I do not feel justified in asking the Land Commission to undertake.
