Vol. 165 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Waterford Schools.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the position regarding the proposed extension to the Sisters of Charity national school, Parnell Street, Waterford.

As I informed the Deputy in reply to his previous question on the 7th November, 1957, the arrangements which are a necessary preliminary to the sanction of a grant towards the cost of carrying out a scheme of reconstruction and improvement at St. Joseph's Convent national school, Parnell Street, Waterford, have been completed.

I regret, however, that having regard to the availability of grant funds in the current financial year and to the necessity for giving priority to the more urgent cases, it will not be possible to sanction a grant within the year in respect of the proposed scheme at this school. The case will, however, be carefully considered when the question of the projects to be allowed to proceed in the financial year 1958-59 falls to be determined.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the position regarding the proposed new schools at St. John's Park, Waterford.

A suitable site has been offered for the proposed new school at St. John's Park (Ballytruckle), Waterford City. Sketch plans for the school have been prepared by the manager's architects and have been approved by the Commissioners of Public Works and by my Department. Certain arrangements with which my Department and the manager are concerned will have to be made before the stage will be reached at which a grant towards the cost of the new school could be sanctioned. These arrangements are receiving attention.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the position regarding the proposed new Ferrybank boys' national school, Waterford.

I am advised by the Commissioners of Public Works that they have accepted a tender for the erection of the proposed new Ferrybank boys' national school, Waterford. There should now be no undue delay in having the work commenced.
