Vol. 165 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Income from Social Insurance Contributions.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state the income derivable from an increase in the social insurance contribution payable by both employers and employees of 3d. for adult males, 2d. for adult females and 1d. for juveniles.

No information is available as to the numbers of contributions payable under the Social Welfare Acts, 1952 and 1956, in respect of juveniles as there are no special rates of contributions under those Acts for juveniles.

If the employer's share and the employee's share of weekly contributions were each increased by 3d. in the case of males, and by 2d. in the case of females, it is estimated that the resultant additional income would be about £550,000 a year. Contributions effective only for the scheme of widows' and orphans' pensions have been excluded from this estimate.

Are the figures which the Parliamentary Secretary has quoted related to a total contribution of 3d. and 2d. or a contribution separately by the employer and employee of 3d. and 2d.?

The yield from 6d. increase in the case of men would be £410,000 and from 4d. increase in the case of women would be £140,000.

A total contribution of 6d. and 4d.?
