Vol. 166 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Division of Wexford Estate.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state when it is intended to divide the Deane estate, County Wexford, which was acquired by the Land Commission some years ago.

A scheme for the division of this estate which comprises 228 acres is in course of preparation but at present it is not possible to forecast when allotment will be feasible. However, it is unlikely that the lands will be divided this spring.

No doubt the Minister is aware that his Department have had this estate for about three years. It has been let each year on conacre. Is it intended to let it again this year on conacre and, if so, what is the purpose of the Land Commission in taking a farm, if they persistently continue letting it on conacre? In other words, has the Land Commission given up dividing land in Wexford?

In reply to the Deputy, his information is wrong. The acquisition of this estate took place on 4th January, 1956.

Is it not a fact that the land was let in conacre in 1956 and 1957? I understand now it is to be let on conacre in 1958.

The Deputy apparently did not hear my replies to other questions, which indicated that the Land Commission have agreed to expedite over the next three years the division of all lands which have been acquired for more than two years.

I put it to the Minister that there is no reason why this estate should not be divided this year. The Land Commission have had it long enough. There are plenty of smallholders around the area. I do not see any purpose in holding it any longer. Perhaps the Minister could indicate why he is doing so?
