Vol. 167 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Import Duty on Newsprint.

asked the Minister for Finance whether, in view of the fact that, although a number of special import levies were revoked in April, 1957, the special import levy of 5 per cent. ad valorem on newsprint was later made a permanent import duty, and that while considerable concessions in the way of exemptions from taxation are being offered to foreign industrialists to induce them to establish factories in Ireland, a highly important existing Irish industry, giving direct and indirect employment to thousands of people, is being penalised by a permanent import duty, he will safeguard the welfare of a long-established native industry by having this penal import duty on newsprint revoked at an early date.

I have no statement to make on this matter except that I do not accept the implications of the question.

I am afraid that I could not hear the Minister that time either.

I said that I have no statement to make except that I do not accept the implications.

The Minister will not admit that he is wrong in any case.
