Vol. 167 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Lourdes Pilgrims: Appointment of Officer.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if, in view of the large number of pilgrims from this country visiting Lourdes this year, he will establish an officer of his Department at Lourdes to look after their requirements.

The Deputy is, of course, aware that the vast bulk of the Irish pilgrims visiting Lourdes travel as members of very carefully organised groups, accompanied by persons of experience, and that in Lourdes itself there is a very efficient system of organisation controlled by the Lourdes authorities to deal with pilgrims. The representatives of the more important transport companies and travel agencies also assist in taking care of pilgrims.

For these reasons I am not convinced that the opening of a Government office in Lourdes is necessary, or, indeed, that such a step would be wise. I would hesitate to open one except on the basis of stronger evidence of the need for it than is at present available. If, however, such evidence becomes available, I shall be very happy to consider it.
