Vol. 168 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Transport Licences.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the current number of road transport licences (plate) issued under the Road Transport Acts, together with particulars of the main categories on the basis of mileage or on other convenient basis.

Full particulars of all merchandise licences issued are entered in the statutory register which is open to public inspection in my Department at all reasonable times.

Excluding the licences held by the railway companies, there are at present 957 merchandise licences current. Details of these licences vary so widely that there is no basis on which it would be practicable to prepare a statistical analysis. The Deputy may, however, wish to refer to the report of the Committee of Inquiry into Internal Transport, 1957, which was presented to Dáil Éireann on the 11th May, 1957. Paragraphs 269-276 of that report give considerable general information about merchandise licences.
