Vol. 169 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dungarvan Reconstruction Grant Investigations.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the cause of the delay in the investigation of the alleged fraudulent securing of a reconstruction grant in the Dungarvan urban area.

There has been no avoidable delay on the part of the Garda Síochána but, for reasons outside their control, they have so far been unable to complete their inquiries, investigations are continuing.

Is it not correct that the 24th March was the date of the complaint, which is over three months ago, and would the Minister not consider it desirable that such allegations be investigated in full and reported in order to give the local authority an opportunity of dealing with it when the matter is out of the hands of the police, and further would he endeavour to see that the investigation is completed as soon as possible?

I would be very anxious to see the investigation brought to a conclusion, but the Deputy will agree that it would be undesirable for me to attempt to take any action in regard to the investigation while the investigation is actually continuing.

Would the Minister say if progress of any sort has been made since the last date on which I asked a similar question?

I could not say what amount of progress has been made. I know some progress has been made but I understand also that the investigations are not being helped along by the attitude of certain individuals.
