Vol. 170 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Newtownmountkennedy Forestry Employees.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that a number of men were recently discharged from the forestry station at Newtownmount-kennedy, some of whom had over 14 years' service and others of whom had seven years' service; and whether, in view of his recent statement that he would sympathetically consider the claims of men with long service, he will consider offering alternative employment to these men.

Due to a contraction in the reserves of work available at Delgany forest, it was necessary to reduce the staff by seven men. The reduction was unavoidable and due weight was attached to length of service in deciding what men should be laid off. There is no immediate prospect of their re-employment by my Department.
