Vol. 170 No. 6

Written Answers. - Employees outside Scope of Social Welfare Acts.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state the approximate number of employees outside the scope of the Social Welfare Acts and the estimated income that would be derived from abolishing the income ceiling in respect of the insurance of non-manual employees.

The employees outside the scope of the Social Welfare Acts comprise those under 16 years of age and non-manual employees whose rates of remuneration exceed £600 per annum.

The number of employees under 16 years of age is estimated at approximately 24,000 and the number of non-manual employees in receipt of remuneration exceeding £600 per annum is estimated at approximately 29,000.

The income that would be derived from the abolition of the present remuneration ceiling of £600 per annum under the Social Welfare Acts is estimated at £290,000 a year.
