Vol. 170 No. 6

Written Answers. - Central Government Taxation: Indirect Taxes.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the amounts of direct and indirect taxation levied by the State in the years 1938-39 and 1948-49 to date.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state from publications of the O.E.E.C., the United Nations or other international bodies the proportion of central government taxation in European countries represented by indirect taxes.

It is proposed, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 30 and 31 together.

The table entitled "Budget accounts and public debt" in the public finance section of the United Nations' Statistical Year Book for 1957, and earlier years, copies of which are available in the Oireachtas Library, contains figures of direct and indirect central government taxation in European countries, including Ireland, from which the information requested by the Deputy may be derived.

Particulars of central government tax revenue in Ireland are, of course, available in greater detail in the annual Finance Accounts, copies of which are also available in the Library.
