Vol. 171 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Propaganda on Cigarette Smoking.

asked the Minister for Health if propaganda intended to inform the public about the proven relationship between cancer of the lung and cigarette smoking has yet been made available to local health authorities.

The attention of the public has already been drawn, in a detailed statement which I issued to the Press, to the results of recent investigations into the relationship between tobacco smoking and cancer of the lung. Copies of this statement were sent to all health authorities, who were asked to arrange that local publicity on the subject be given by their medical and nursing staffs—for example, in course of visits to the schools and to parents in their homes.

A leaflet designed to dissuade young people from starting to smoke has been sent for printing. A second leaflet, for adults, which will bring to notice the results of the recent investigations into smoking and lung cancer will shortly be ready for printing. Copies of both leaflets will be placed in the Library as soon as they are available.

These leaflets will be widely distributed through the schools, the local authorities and other channels. It is proposed also to make use, from time to time, of other propaganda media such as the radio to place the findings about smoking and lung cancer before the public.
