Vol. 171 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rearrangement of Galway Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the reasons for the delay in having the townlands of Loughconneera and Kylesalia rearranged; and when rearrangement will commence.

asked the Minister for Lands when the Land Commission expect to have the townland of Mweenish, Carna, rearranged.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 44 and 45 together.

The Deputy will appreciate that, even where the Land Commission succeed in securing sufficient additional land to enable effective rearrangement proposals to be formulated, the final outcome depends almost entirely on the voluntary co-operation of the tenants concerned.

In the case of Loughconneera and Kylesalia, agreement by the tenants to certain proposals put forward by the Land Commission was not forthcoming until June last and it is now hoped that a number of holdings will be rearranged and enlarged during the current financial year. Further rearrangement will be effected according as circumstances permit.

As regards Mweenish townland, the Land Commission, in an effort to obtain additional land to facilitate rearrangement, have resumed one holding and have instituted proceedings for the resumption of five further holdings in this townland. The total area involved is upwards of 100 acres. It is not possible, however, pending the result of these proceedings, to indicate when rearrangement proposals can be formulated.
