Vol. 171 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Expenditure on Roads.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has considered whether it would not be more advantageous to the public to expend public money on the surfacing of roads rather than on the removal of bends and corners where danger signs would be just as safe and adequate to meet the situation.

When introducing the Department's Estimate for the current year I dealt with road schemes involving realignment and made it clear that I am not in favour of these schemes in present circumstances unless definitely established traffic hazards warrant them or the road is, on account of its general condition, in need of reconstruction. On the other hand the Deputy's expression "surfacing of roads" does not fully indicate the nature of the work which qualifies for 100 per cent. grants from the Road Fund. Such work includes realignment, reconstruction, alteration of camber and other forms of permanent improvement.
