Vol. 171 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mobile Police Force.

17.

asked the Minister for Justice if a mobile police force would be more effective to deal with modern crime than the present system; and, if so, if he will consider organising the Garda force on such lines when replacements are necessary.

I am not sure that I understand what the Deputy has in mind when he refers to a mobile police force, but I would point out that the policy in recent years has been to increase the mobility of the force by making available further patrol cars. The intention is to have a car available for each Garda district and it is hoped that this position will be reached in another year or so.

The question of Garda transport is under constant review in connection not only with crime conditions but also with organisational changes such as the closing of stations.
