Vol. 171 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Appointment of Sub-Postmasters.

47.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state in detail the regulations governing the appointment of sub-postmasters.

To be eligible for appointment as sub-postmaster a person must be over 21 years of age; must be suitable personally as regards health, character, intelligence, education, financial standing and aptitude for post office work; must offer suitable premises and must be able to provide any assistance necessary for the conduct of the office. Persons engaged in certain occupations are considered ineligible normally for appointment but exceptions may be made at the discretion of the Minister in special circumstances, for example, when no other suitable candidate is available. A good knowledge of Irish is required for Fíor-Ghaeltacht and is desirable for Breac-Ghaeltacht offices.
