Vol. 172 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sale of Irish Herring in Western Germany.

17.

asked the Minister for Lands what import facilities will be made available in Western Germany for the sale of Irish salted herring in the present curing season.

In accordance with the provisions of our trade agreement with the Federal Republic of Germany of 1953, trade discussions recently took place between official representatives of both countries. A quota of 300,000 D. Ms. (approximately £25,000) was secured for the importation of Irish salted herring in the year ending 30th September, 1959. This quota is five times greater than was secured for the preceding year. It is satisfactory to note that import licences to the value of two-thirds of the quota are already available to German importers.
