Vol. 172 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - South County Dublin Flooding.

22.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that flooding occurred in the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown area causing damage to property on the 19th December, 1958; and if, in view of the repeated flooding which occurred in this area during last year, he will endeavour to expedite work on the joint drainage scheme for the area so that further damage may be prevented.

23.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the serious flooding which occurred in the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown area on 19th December, 1958, and of the damage caused to a number of residences as a result; and if, in view of the fact that in some cases this was the fifth time during 1958 that flooding occurred, he will now favourably consider an ex gratia payment to those persons who suffered damage to property.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 22 and 23 together. I am aware of the occurrence of flooding in a number of areas in County Dublin on the occasion mentioned, but I have no information in regard to damage to property in individual cases.

I am not aware of any circumstances which would warrant the making of ex gratia payments and there are no funds at my disposal from which such payments could be made.

With regard to the joint surface water drainage scheme for Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown area, I would refer the Deputy to my reply to his question of the 16th December, 1958. I am awaiting the detailed plans from the local authorities concerned, and when these come to hand I shall have them dealt with as expeditiously as possible.
