Vol. 172 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Division of Laoighis Estates.

14.

asked the Minister for Lands whether the Franks estate, Westfield, Castletown, Mountrath, County Laoighis, will be divided in time for the coming spring; or whether it is proposed to set the lands for a further period.

A scheme for the division of this estate, which was acquired in March last, is in course of preparation but it is unlikely that it will be completed in time to permit the allotment of the lands during the coming spring. If allotment does not prove feasible, letings will be made.

15.

asked the Minister for Lands when the Robinson estate, Kilnacash, Mountmellick, will be divided; and if he will state the date on which it was taken over by the Land Commission.

The Land Commission have not yet obtained possession of this estate but arrangements are being made to take over the property at an early date. After possession is taken there will be no delay in disposing of the lands.

Can the Minister say whether there is any prospect of the Land Commission taking action in time for the sowing of this year's crops? It would be of great benefit if a decision could be taken in the matter as otherwise the local people will be obliged to take land by conacre elsewhere.

There is a fair chance.

16.

asked the Minister for Lands what steps the Land Commission have taken for the early acquisition and division of the lands of Major Chetwood-Aiken, Woodbrook, Portarlington; and what progress has been made in the matter since lists of applicants were submitted to the Land Commission some years ago, and again in recent months by the local land division committee.

The Land Commission considered the question of acquiring this estate in 1939 and again in 1949 but on neither occasion did circumstances warrant institution of proceedings. However, an area of 294 acres was subsequently purchased by my Department for afforestation purposes. There are no proceedings for the acquisition of the balance of the estate. The case has been noted for attention.

Having regard to the fact that consideration was given to this matter in 1939, and again in 1949, now that we are in 1959 would the Minister be prepared to ask the Land Commission to give it sympathetic consideration?

The matter will receive that attention.
