Vol. 172 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Chewing Gum Factory.

4.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if there are any proposals before his Department for the establishment of a chewing gum factory; and, if so, whether the chewing gum will be for export or for home consumption; and how many it is proposed to employ in this industry.

Proposals coming before my Department for the establishment of new industries by private enterprise are confidential and, accordingly, I am unable to give the information requested.

Is it not a fact, or is it a fact, that the Minister failed to notice a statement made by a member of this House to the effect that a chewing gum factory was about to be set up and that chewing gum interests from abroad were in this country exploring possibilities? Is it also a fact that, in view of the Minister's failure to control and reduce the prices of food, he is now making available supplies of chewing gum for the people to replace food?

Does the Deputy want a sample?
