Vol. 172 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Uneconomic Holdings in Wexford.

17.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that there are many farmers in County Wexford with uneconomic holdings; and what proposals there are to acquire land for the purpose of sub-division amongst small farmers.

Land division in the county depends on the acquisition of suitable estates as and where they become available. At present, the Land Commission have on hands about 1,000 acres of arable land in the county; in addition, proceedings are in progress for the compulsory acquisition or voluntary purchase of two estates comprising a further 100 acres. As I stated in reply to a question on 4th December last, it may be possible to allot about 800 acres in County Wexford during the current financial year. The claims of uneconomic holders will be fully considered in connection with the disposal of these lands.

Is the Minister in a position to furnish or place on the records of the House particulars or details of the land already in the hands of the Land Commission and the land it is proposed to acquire?

That information was given in the form of a tabular statement.

A previous occasion.

Could the Minister say on what date?

On Tuesday, 10th June, 1958. It was a statement of the lands on hand in Wexford and some other counties.

But the Minister said that there were proposals to acquire more land?

In regard to the disposition of lands we have on hand, no statement is made until they are actually disposed of.
