Vol. 172 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Teaching of History.

21.

asked the Minister for Education whether his attention has been drawn in recent weeks to cases where national schoolteachers are referring in a biassed manner to matters of a current political nature during the teaching of Irish history, and that this has been deplored by parents; and what action he has taken or proposes to take in the matter.

The answer to the first part of the question is no and the second part does not, therefore, arise.

Has the Minister's attention been drawn to the fact that a number of Fianna Fáil schoolteachers have been making references to the Presidential election and have been referring directly or indirectly to the Taoiseach in the presence of schoolchildren; and if such facts are brought to the Minister's attention, will he take steps to see that this is stopped in national schools?

If the Deputy has any representations to make in that regard, the proper person to whom to address them is the school manager, who is in charge of the school.

The school manager may share the same political views and, if he does, might I ask the Minister to take action?

That would show remarkable enlightenment.
