Vol. 173 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Imported Barley.

2.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the price paid for imported barley this season, and the countries from which it was imported.

It is assumed that by "this season" the Deputy means the period from the commencement of the current cereal year on 1st September, 1958. The following are the countries from which barley, excluding seeds for sowing, was imported in the months September, 1958—January, 1959 and the average c.i.f. price per cwt. paid in each case:

Great Britain:

United States of America:

Am I correct in saying that that is substantially higher than the price of 37/- per barrel fixed by the Minister for Agriculture for homegrown barley?

One is green and the other is dry.

I know all about the green, the grey, the blue and the pink, but, when we come down to tin tacks, is it or is it not a higher price for imported barley than the price fixed by the Minister for Agriculture for Irish barley?

It is a lower price.
