Vol. 173 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Old Age Pensioners' Medical Cards.

14.

asked the Minister for Health if an old age pensioner who has a county council cottage vested in him or her will be precluded from getting a medical card.

An old age pensioner is not precluded from getting a medical card solely by reason of having a county council cottage vested in him or her. The determination of eligibility for a medical card is a matter for the health authority and in making such determination that authority must have regard to all relevant factors including income.

Could the Minister indicate what financial assessment is made on the labourer's cottage?

I could not. There are almost 100,000 labourers' cottages in Ireland and I could not possibly give any information as to what each local authority would assess the value of these cottages at.
