Vol. 173 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Inchigeela (Cork) Garda Station.

28.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that only one Garda is now stationed at Inchigeela, where up to 1958 there were a sergeant and four Gardaí; and if he will take immediate steps to restore the strength of the Gardaí in the area.

The strength of this station was reduced to one man as from the 1st December, 1958. The strength immediately prior to that date was one sergeant and two Gardaí. The commissioner is satisfied that the policing of the district can be adequately provided for by the present arrangement and it is not proposed to restore the strength of the station.

Since I put down the question, I have learned that the very same position exists in other villages in West Cork, where only one Garda is stationed in the village barracks; and the public there are very displeased with the whole position.

That is not a bit like a question. It is a positive statement.

I want to let the Minister know that the public of West Cork want the strength of the Garda restored to what it was formerly. The squad cars are not giving satisfaction. They are only there raiding "pubs".
