Vol. 174 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cavan School Requirements.

41.

asked the Minister for Education how he reconciles the fact that in a reply of 29th January, 1959, concerning the number of schools required to be built in Cavan in 1959, he gave the figure of twenty while in a reply of 6th March, 1958, the number needed was given as thirty-one and the figure of schools returned by him as completed since 1958 was one.

The figures in respect of schools required to be built in Co. Cavan furnished to the Deputy in reply to his questions of 6th March, 1958 and 25th February, 1959 included all cases where new schools were at the time regarded as being required and where the actual building of new schools had not commenced. There were 31 such cases on 6th March, 1958.

During the period between 6th March, 1958, and 25th February, 1959, work commenced on the building of five schools. Six of the other cases included in the tabular statement furnished with my reply of 6th March, 1958, were removed from the list, because, due to falling averages and other factors, it was considered unlikely that their replacement by new schools would be necessary. In order to render four of the schools serviceable for the period for which they would be required minor schemes of repairs have been carried out to the buildings.

From this information it will be seen how the figure of 20 given in my reply of the 25th February, 1959 was arrived at.
