asked the Taoiseach if he will state the total imports of (a) ale and (b) lager for the past three years and for the first quarter of this year.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ale and Lager Imports.
Imports of ale and of lager beer are brought to account under the single heading "Beer (including ale, stout and porter)" and accordingly separate particulars of these imports are not available. Estimates of the imports of lager beer have, however, been made for the period 1st January, 1959, to 31st March, 1959. These figures were compiled from the basic import documents when they were being subjected to the usual examination shortly after their receipt but since importers are not required to specify exactly the type of beer being imported the information available was not complete in many cases and the resulting figures must be considered as only tentative estimates. Particulars of imports of ale were not extracted from the documents when the figures for imports of lager beer were being compiled. It would not be practicable at this stage to re-examine all the relevant basic import documents in an attempt to produce estimates of imports of lager beer and of ale for the periods mentioned by the Deputy but as an indication of the type of beer imported separate particulars by country of origin are given.
Accordingly I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate in the Official Report statements showing (a) the quantity and value of imports of “Beer (including ale, stout and porter)” by country of origin in each of the years 1956 to 1958 inclusive and in the period 1st January, 1959, to 31st March, 1959, and (b) the estimated quantity and value of imports of lager beer by country of origin in the period 1st January, 1959, to 31st March, 1959.
Following is the statement:—
(a) IMPORTS of Beer (including ale, stout and porter) in each year 1956-58 and in the period 1st January, 1959 to 31st March, 1959.
