Vol. 174 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rural Electrification in Donegal.

1.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce when development of the Croagh area, County Donegal, may be undertaken under the rural electrification scheme.

I am informed by the Electricity Supply Board that the Croagh rural area has been considered for selection by the Board on a number of occasions, but has not so far been selected as the returns for the area did not compare favourably with those for other areas awaiting development in the Board's Sligo North, Co. Donegal, district. The area will be reconsidered by the Board in due course and the decision of the Board will depend on how the returns then compare with those for other areas awaiting development in the Sligo North, Co. Donegal, district.

Since this is a rather big area, which can be undertaken economically in different pockets, would the Parliamentary Secretary undertake to use his good offices for the development of the areas in question?

I do not see, from the information available to me, that the area will be developed for some time to come.

I am not satisfied that the area is not an economic one, because there are portions of it which, if dealt with, would provide a fairly economic scheme.

I think this is a matter which the Deputy should take up with the Electricity Supply Board, which is charged with that responsibility.
