Vol. 174 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Department of Social Welfare Staff Canteen.

3.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state in connection with the staff canteen at his Department the amount of State grant given as subvention, and any other assistance given for which State funds are used, such as accommodation, light, heating, cleaning, etc., and an estimate of the cost of these items; whether he is aware that responsible caterers with business in the vicinity claim that this canteen is being used by the public to the detriment of ratepayers in the area, and, if so, if he will take steps to stop this practice.

The staff canteen of the Department of Social Welfare at Áras Mhic Dhiarmada does not receive any State grant but, in common with other canteens for State servants, is not charged for the use of premises, nor for lighting, heating or fuel. The three last-mentioned items form part of the general maintenance of the whole building and are not costed separately. I am not aware, and I have received no complaints, that the canteen is being used to the detriment of caterers with business in the vicinity. It is available only to civil servants who are members of the Staff Dining Club and there is a daily check to ensure that it is not being used by the public.

If information on this matter is forthcoming in regard to complaints from reputable traders will the Parliamentary Secretary undertake to consider it?

Yes. I undertake to consider it.
