Vol. 175 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Letterkenny Postal Deliveries.

24.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that postal delivery takes place in the town of Letterkenny between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. before business premises open, and again between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. when business premises are closed for lunch; and that if the deliveries include registered letters or packets, these are returned to the post office by the delivering postman, and will be handed out to addressees only on being called for and on payment of 3d. per letter or registered packet; and, if so, if he will take immediate steps to have this unsatisfactory state of affairs rectified, and to discontinue the disruption of the business routine of the townspeople.

The Deputy appears to have been misinformed about the times of postal deliveries in Letterkenny. The first delivery occupies from 7.30 a.m. to 10 a.m. and the second from 1.15 p.m. to 3.30 p.m. When a registered or other item not deliverable into a letter box cannot be disposed of on a delivery, the Postman concerned leaves a form of notification to that effect with a request that someone be in attendance to accept the item on the next delivery. Alternatively, the item may be collected at the Post Office on payment of the usual fee of 3d.

There are no exceptional features in these arrangements. I am unable to agree that they are unsatisfactory or harmful to the interests of the local business community and am not aware of any general desire amongst any particular section of the townspeople for their revision.
