Vol. 176 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Compensation for Prevention of Net Fishing on River Moy.

16.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state (a) the names and addresses of persons who were paid or are to be paid compensation arising from the prevention of net fishing for salmon and other fish on the River Moy, and (b) the amount paid or payable to each such person.

As the amount of compensation paid was arrived at by negotiation and by consideration of numerous different factors in each individual case, it has not been the practice to make public the several payments made. I trust that the statement in general terms which follows will be found to afford adequate information.

A total sum of £38,961 has been paid to 8 persons or groups of persons who claimed compensation as owners or lessees of fisheries on the River Moy affected by the prohibition. A total sum of £2,327 has been paid to 25 persons who claimed compensation as fishery employees affected by the prohibition on the River Moy. The only claim outstanding is one on behalf of the owner of a fishery and as this is still under negotiation the amount of compensation payable cannot be stated.
