asked the Taoiseach if he will state the Irish speaking population of County Clare in the years 1925, 1935, 1945, 1955 and 1958.

Statistics of the Irish speaking population for the whole of County Clare are available from the Census of Population for the years 1926, 1936 and 1946. The 1926 total, which relates to persons of all ages was 28,842. The 1936 and 1946 figures, which exclude persons under 3 years of age were 27,078 and 21,186 respectively.

In 1925, at the request of the Gaeltacht Commission a special census was taken covering selected areas of the country in which it was anticipated that considerable numbers of Irish speakers were located. A total of 18,824 Irish speakers were returned for County Clare excluding the Urban District of Ennis and the Rural Districts of Limerick No. 2 and Scariff.
