Vol. 178 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Medals for Officers of United Nations' Force in Lebanon.

17.

asked the Minister for Defence whether service medals were issued to the officers of the twenty-one nations of the United Nations' force which served in the Lebanon on United Nations Day, 24th October, 1950; and if any such medals were issued to Irish officers, and, if not, why not.

I am aware that the United Nations decided to award a commemorative medal and ribbon to the military personnel who served with the Observation Group in the Lebanon, the award to be subject to the approval of the National Governments concerned.

I have no information as to the position regarding the actual issue of the medal and ribbon to the eligible personnel of the other nations. In so far as our own officers are concerned, however, I understand that the medals and ribbons will be available very shortly for issue to them.
