Vol. 178 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Winter Relief Work.

21.

asked the Minister for Finance how many men it is expected will be employed under the relief grant which is being made available to Dún Laoghaire Corporation for winter relief work.

As the works have not yet started it is not possible to estimate accurately how many men will be employed. Employment necessarily varies with the types of work undertaken but it is calculated that the schemes will give a total of approximately 600 man-weeks employment, which is the equivalent of employing say 35 men over a period of four months. Taking into account that the period of employment for unskilled men is normally limited to eight weeks it may be assumed that some 60 individual workmen in all will get employment.

22.

asked the Minister for Finance how many men will be employed under the relief grant which is being made available to the Dublin County Council for winter relief in the Rathdown area.

Schemes have not been allocated to the Rathdown area as such but allocations, including local contributions, amounting to £270 and £535 respectively, a total of £805, have been made for Sandyford and for Dún Laoghaire suburbs which are in that area. As the schemes have not yet started it is not possible to forecast precisely how many men will be employed, but they are calculated to give 80 man-weeks employment which is equivalent to employing say 16 men for five weeks.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary state whether arrangements have been made for similar schemes in North County Dublin?

There is an allocation of £3,000 with a contribution from the local authority of £1,000 making £4,000 in all for Dublin County as a whole. These amounts will be allocated to 11 towns, I think, in the county area.
