Vol. 178 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Pay and Conditions.

22.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that there is considerable dissatisfaction in the Garda Síochána because of unsatisfactory pay and conditions; and when it is intended to effect improvements in these matters.

I am aware that members of the Garda Síochána, in common with other persons employed in the public service, apply from time to time for an improvement in their pay and conditions of service.

To deal with these applications, a scheme of Conciliation and Arbitration for members of the Garda Síochána up to and including the rank of Chief Superintendent, was brought into operation some months ago. The scheme provides that matters coming within the scope of the scheme will be dealt with exclusively through the machinery of the scheme. Such matters include claims and proposals relating to pay and conditions, and a claim for increased pay is at present being dealt with under the scheme.
