Vol. 178 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Limerick Housing.

62.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the number of houses erected in County Limerick (exclusive of Limerick city area) by the local authority in 1959 to date; what proposals are before his Department for sanction or have been recently sanctioned in regard to rural housing by the Limerick County Council; and the estimated needs for housing in the county area at the most recent survey.

Thirty-eight cottages were completed by Limerick County Council between 1st January, 1959, and 31st October, 1959. Since January last, approval has issued to the acceptance by the council of tenders in respect of 17 rural cottages, six cottages at Carrigeen and four at Garrynoe. No proposals for the erection of rural cottages are awaiting my approval at present. The most recent figures submitted by the council, on 2nd October, 1959, regarding the housing needs of the county health district indicated that 93 approved applicants were then awaiting rehousing by the council and it was estimated that 150 further families who had not applied for rehousing were living in unfit dwellings or in overcrowded conditions.
