Vol. 178 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pension Scheme for Auxiliary Postmen.

94.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will consider introducing a pension scheme for auxiliary postmen, or, at least, giving them the option of participating in a contributory superannuation scheme such as is available to county council workers.

The Superannuation Acts do not permit of the introduction of any type of pension scheme for part-time employees like Auxiliary Postmen. The question of bringing part-time employees within the scope of those Acts is one which the Minister for Finance would have to consider in relation to the State Service as a whole.

Will the Minister not consider some system by which a small contribution can be made by these people, and make a contribution to balance it, so as to give even a small pension at the end of their service? While it is admitted that they are part-time, nevertheless they are just as entitled to a pension as others.

That and other matters are being discussed between the staff side and the official side of the general council of the scheme of conciliation and arbitration. Such a question has been under consideration for a long time.
