Vol. 179 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Traffic Accidents: Persons Killed and Injured.

8.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the total numbers (a) killed and (b) injured in traffic accidents in the Twenty-Six Counties during the ten-year period ended 31st December, 1959.

The total number of persons killed in road traffic accidents in the ten-year period ended 31st December, 1959 was 2,653, and the number injured in the period was 45,872. The figures for the year 1959 included in this total are provisional.

Could I ask the Taoiseach if he would agree to take some even interim steps to bring in legislation to control the number of traffic accidents by speed limits in built-up areas or driving tests?

Those are separate matters.

The Minister for Local Government hopes to be able to circulate, as a White Paper, certain proposals for the revision of the existing road traffic legislation in the course of the next couple of weeks.

And it took him three years to do it.
